Over confident? It’s not over till it’s over, and particularly where you have absolutley no influence over an outcome or development which has a potentially life changing effect. My share portfolio has done very well in the last three months, but needs to do a whole lot better to enable me to change my life. High risks, high rewards? More like white knuckle roller coaster ride. I can afford to lose the cash, although it would hurt - even better if it multiplied a few times.

Five years ago, I was made redundant. I decided to set up my own business, vowing never to work for a big company again. I also vowed that, as I had been denied £2-3m in salary and bonuses for the remainder of my working life, that I would earn that in the next five years. I am nearly there. I adopted a portfolio approach, selling my time as a consultant, investing in high risk AIM market shares and developing web sites, initially on a commission basis to avoid any stock holding risk. One of my shares is aboiut to explode and make me financially independent, fingers crossed, famous last words! What my wife and I have achieved is effectively to have our mortgage covered as well - we have an offset mortgage which is now virtually covered by savings meaning our repaymentsare all reducing the outstandinmg caputal sum. Why don’t we pay it off, you may ask? Purely a case of liquidity, and particularly whilst we are both interim and no guaranteed salary. So in five years time, I will have a different story to tell - looking to build on the success and freedom I have enjoyed since shaking off the shackles of the daily grind.

The world is changing at an incredible rate, and technology is advancing that change. Technology has outpaced anyone’s capaciy to deploy it, there is a huge gap between what can be done and what is being done. What are your views on energy - what happens when it runs out? What about congestion - traffic is getting worse, yet there are few alternatives that are realistically convenient. What about increasing population, both from immigration and birth rates. Will the infrastructure cope? Will Alex Ferguson be in charge of Man Utd in five years’ time? My idea for this blog is to generate the most accurateview of what life will be like in five year’s time. At hat time, entries will be reviewed and the contributor with the most accurate prediction will be announced. Maybe I can get a sponsor by then, if there are enough of you willing to participate! Why not? It’s just a bit of fun!
